The City of Groningen had the premiere of digital fireworks. With the introduction of firework-free zones, Groningen came up with a unique alternative. On the Vismarkt, there was a light installation where digital fireworks could be set off by everyone. With an app, a (firework) effect could be selected, which was then 'ignited' on the 30 thousand LED lights of the installation.
The light installation was developed on behalf of the Municipality of Groningen and Groninger City Club, based on the idea of Goldmund, Wyldebeast & Wunderliebe. This project was realized in a short time, also thanks to Klabam, Sitecrew, and Soundbase.
Our approach for the digital fireworks project combined technical innovation with a focus on user experience. We developed a system that could produce impressive visual effects while being accessible to all visitors. The focus was on creating a safe, sustainable, and memorable alternative to traditional fireworks.
The technical implementation included an advanced stack with WebGL for visual effects, Django for the backend, and React for the mobile app. The installation consisted of 100 LED strings with a total of 30,000 lights, controlled by a powerful 16kW system. The combination of hardware and software ensured a seamless and reliable user experience.
